Vastu Remedies You Can Apply Without Breaking a Wall

Vastu Shastra has always included upaya — corrective measures for when the ideal layout isn't possible. For a flat, that's the whole game, and most of it needs nothing more than a trip to the market.

You can't move the kitchen or relocate a bathroom in an apartment, so the remedies below work with colour, placement, light and upkeep instead. Start with the direction grid to see which corner of your home you're treating.

Colour

• North-east: white, pale blue, light yellow. Keep it bright.
• East: white and light greens.
• South-east: warm tones — orange, pink, terracotta.
• South-west: earthy browns, beige, mud tones for grounding.
• West / north-west: white, cream, pale grey.
• Avoid large areas of black or dark blue in the south and south-west.

Mirrors

A mirror on a north or east wall is used to visually “extend” a space and, in the case of a cut or missing corner, to symbolically complete it. Keep mirrors off south and west walls, and never facing the bed or the main door.

Sea salt

A small open bowl of rock or sea salt in a bathroom — especially a north-east or south-west bathroom — is the most common apartment remedy for absorbing negative energy. Replace it when it turns damp, roughly every week or two. Some people also add a little salt to their mopping water.

Plants

• A tulsi (holy basil) plant in the north or north-east is considered highly auspicious.
• Money plant indoors, ideally in the south-east.
• Keep tall, heavy plants in the south and west.
• Avoid thorny plants (roses are the usual exception), bonsai, and cactus inside the home.
• Remove dead or dying plants quickly.

Lighting

Dark corners are treated as stagnant. Keep the north-east well lit. A south-east corner that lacks a natural fire source (no kitchen, no electricals) can be given a lamp or warm light. A salt lamp works well in this role.

Placement and weight

• Put the heaviest furniture, almirah and safe against the south and west walls of any room.
• Keep the north-east of every room, and the centre of the home, as open as you can.
• The safe or locker should ideally open towards the north.
• Don't keep a shoe rack, dustbin or broom near the main entrance.

Maintenance as a remedy

• Fix every leaking tap. Dripping water, particularly in the north-east or kitchen, is read as ongoing financial leakage.
• Repair cracked windows, jammed doors and broken hinges — especially on the main door.
• Declutter aggressively. Clutter under the bed, on the staircase and in the centre of the home is treated as a real Vastu problem, not a metaphor.
• Make sure the main door opens fully and doesn't creak.

Symbolic and traditional aids

Pyramids, Vastu strips, a swastika or Om at the entrance, wind chimes in the north-west, and a clean water feature in the north-east are all commonly used. Treat these as supportive rather than decisive — the placement and maintenance items above do more work.
