North-Facing vs. East-Facing Flats: What Vastu Actually Says

Both north-facing and east-facing flats are considered favourable in Vastu. Neither is a dealbreaker — and what you do with the space inside matters far more than the wall your front door sits on.

“Is a north-facing or an east-facing flat better?” is probably the most common Vastu question from apartment buyers. The short answer: both are considered good, neither is a dealbreaker, and the direction of the entrance matters far less than what you do with the space inside.

What “facing” actually means

The facing direction is the direction you look out when you stand inside your main door and face the exit. An east-facing flat has its main door on the east wall; a north-facing flat has it on the north wall.

The favourable facings

• North: associated with wealth and career (the direction of Kubera). Considered excellent.
• East: associated with health, clarity and new beginnings (the direction of the rising sun). Also considered excellent.
• North-east: often regarded as the most auspicious of all.

So between a north-facing and an east-facing flat, Vastu doesn't hand you a clear winner. Pick based on light, ventilation, the view and the internal layout.

The facings that need more care

South- and west-facing flats are the ones surrounded by myths. Traditional Vastu does treat them as more demanding, but it also provides remedies, and plenty of well-regarded homes face south or west. If you have one, the priorities are: a properly placed entrance within that wall, a heavy and well-used south-west corner, and a light north-east.

Why the entrance “pada” matters more than the wall

Classical Vastu divides each side of a building into segments called padas, and the exact segment your door sits in carries more meaning than the compass direction alone. A door in a favourable pada of a south wall can be better than a door in an unfavourable pada of an east wall. In an apartment you rarely get to choose the pada, which is another reason not to over-index on facing direction.

What matters more than facing

• Where the kitchen and bathrooms fall — these are fixed and heavily weighted.
• Which room you choose as the master bedroom.
• Whether the centre of the flat is open or blocked by a toilet, a store or a beam.
• The north-east: is it a bedroom and bathroom, or is it light and open?

Compare two flats objectively

If you are choosing between units, run both through Vastu Buddy before you decide. Enter the rooms for each layout and compare the overall scores and the room-by-room grades — it's a faster and more honest comparison than arguing about the facing direction.
