Kitchen Vastu: The Best Direction for Your Kitchen (and Fixes if It’s Wrong)

The kitchen is one of the most weighted rooms in any Vastu assessment, because it represents the fire element (Agni) and is linked in traditional teaching to the family's health and finances. In an apartment the kitchen position is fixed by the plumbing, so the practical questions are: how good is the direction you have, and what can you do inside it?

The ideal: south-east

The south-east corner is the seat of Agni, which makes it the preferred location for a kitchen. When the kitchen sits here, the tradition holds that the fire element is properly placed and supports the household.

Within a south-east kitchen, the classic arrangement is: the cook stands facing east while cooking, the stove sits on the south-east platform, and the sink and other water points are kept to the north-east of the kitchen, away from the stove — fire and water are kept apart.

The acceptable alternative: north-west

If the south-east isn't available, the north-west is the usual second choice. It is associated with the air element, which relates to movement and consumption, and is considered a workable place for a kitchen without major concern.

Directions to avoid

• North-east: the most problematic placement. This sector is meant to stay light, clean and watery; a kitchen here is a classic Vastu dosha.
• South-west: the stability corner of the home. Fire here is said to undermine that stability.
• Centre (Brahmasthan): an open-plan kitchen island in the middle of the home puts fire in the one place that should stay clear.

Remedies when the kitchen is in a difficult direction

None of these require breaking a wall:

• Shift the stove as far towards the south-east of the kitchen as the counter allows, and cook facing east.
• Move the sink and drinking water away from the stove, ideally towards the north-east side of the room.
• For a north-east kitchen, keep it spotless, use plenty of white and light colours, and place a bowl of sea salt that you replace regularly.
• For a south-west kitchen, use earthy tones and keep heavy storage on the south and west walls.
• Fix leaking taps promptly — a dripping tap in the kitchen is traditionally read as steady financial loss.
• Keep the gas cylinder or fuel source in the south-east of the room.
• Store grains and provisions in the south-west of the kitchen.
