Bedroom Vastu: Ideal Directions for the Master and Children’s Bedrooms
6 min readThe south-west is the grounding corner of the home — and the ideal spot for the master bedroom. In a flat you usually get to choose which room that is, so this is where you have real control.
You spend a third of your life asleep, so Vastu gives the bedroom — and especially the master bedroom — a lot of weight. The good news for flat owners is that you usually get to choose which room is the master, so this is one area where you have real control.
Master bedroom: south-west
The south-west (Nairutya) is the stability and grounding corner of the home. Traditional Vastu places the head of the household here, on the logic that the people who anchor the family should occupy the most anchored part of the house. A south-west master bedroom is considered the single best placement.
Keep the heaviest furniture — the bed, the wardrobe, the safe — along the south and west walls of this room. Leave the north-east of the room comparatively light.
Other bedrooms
- South: a good, restful direction for any bedroom.
- West: suits children and students; associated with gains and focus.
- North-west: best for guests and for unmarried children. The air element here is linked to movement, so it is not ideal for a couple hoping for stability, but it's fine for shorter stays.
Directions to avoid for the master bedroom
- North-east: reserved for prayer and light; a master bedroom here is discouraged.
- South-east: the fire corner; sleeping here is linked in tradition to restlessness and friction between couples.
- Centre: the Brahmasthan should stay open.
Which way should your head point?
- South — best. The traditional recommendation for deep, restful sleep.
- East — good, especially for students and anyone doing focused work.
- West — acceptable.
- North — avoid. Sleeping with the head to the north is the one position Vastu consistently advises against.
Simple bedroom remedies
- Don't place a mirror where it reflects the bed; cover it at night or reposition it.
- Avoid sleeping directly under an exposed overhead beam.
- Keep electronics and the TV out of the bedroom, or at least away from the bed.
- Use calming, earthy colours in a south-west room; avoid bright reds.
- Don't store water, an aquarium or a fountain in the bedroom.
Whether your master bedroom is well placed is often the single highest-impact line in a whole Vastu report — worth getting right before anything else.
